Are the Ottomans to blame for the removal of the Modern Greeks from Europe and the Modern Greek misery?
The Ottomanist Elias Kolovos (University of Crete) discusses with the historian Yannis Skalidakis (University of Crete), in an event moderated by Modern Greek studies professor Yannis Dimitrakakis (University of Crete), on whether or not the widespread view that the Ottomans are to blame for the departure from the European course during the years of the Ottoman rule and the modern Greek misadventure is valid, on the occasion of the publication of the book by Elias Kolovos, “Stous kairous ton soultanon: oi koinonies tis ellinikis chersonisou ypo othomaniki kyriarchia” (“In the times of the Sultans: The societies of the Greek peninsula under Ottoman rule”, Asini Publishing 2023).

This book is the first attempt to approach the occupation period in Crete from a scientific point of view. After years of research in Greek, German and British archives and a review of numerous studies, testimonies, memoirs and other documents, the author examines the changes that the “German occupation” imposed on Cretan society, economy and politics. In conversation: Yannis Skalidakis, author, and George Constas, journalist.

Crete as a (meta)border: three historians discuss with a writer
The writer Nikos Psilakis, with the literary depiction of Crete as a starting point, discusses with the historians Ilias Kolovos, Associate Professor of Ottoman History at the Department of History and Archaeology of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Crete, Marinos Sarigiannis, researcher at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) and Yannis Skalidakis, lecturer at the University of Crete, on the modern history of Crete as a border island in the wider context of the Eastern Mediterranean. We will start from the years of the Ottoman conquest of Crete, and then discuss the relations between Christians and Muslims on the island until the years of the Greek Revolution, with particular reference to the history of Gramvousa as a pirate centre.
