"Worlds in Conflict"

The 5th Chania Book Festival (CBF), which took place from June 22 to June 28, 2026, concluded with great success, reaffirming its steady evolution into one of the most important international institutions for books and contemporary public dialogue in Greece. The Festival was organized by the Municipality of Chania, co-organized with the Region of Crete, under the auspices and with the support of the Hellenic Parliament and the Ministry of Culture, and in collaboration with dozens of publishing houses, universities, cultural organizations, as well as local and international institutions.

This year's event carried special symbolism, as it marked five years of continuous presence. Over this period, the Chania Book Festival has hosted approximately 450 events (more than 55% of which focused on broader thematic discussions), with over 630 unique participants from 35 countries, utilizing 18 venues across the city of Chania, centered around the Mikis Theodorakis Theatre and the Great Arsenali. Participation reflects a broad and pluralistic representation, comprising 57% men and 43% women.

With the central theme "Worlds in Collision," the 5th Chania Book Festival gathered more than 230 participants from 18 countries, including 30 distinguished authors and academics from abroad. They participated in over 130 thematic panel discussions, book presentations, workshops, performances, poetry readings, film screenings, and music events centered around contemporary Greek and foreign fiction, poetry, and essays.

An institution establishing itself as an international meeting point for books, ideas, and public dialogue

For an entire week, Chania was transformed into an open meeting point for authors, translators, publishers, academics, journalists, and thousands of readers from Greece and abroad. The packed venues, the resonance of the events, the continuous presence of the public—who embraced the Festival with their participation from day one, culminating over the weekend—and the discussions that carried on well past the end of each event confirmed that the Chania Book Festival has earned a distinct place on the country's cultural map.

Five years after its inaugural edition, the Festival reaffirms its identity as an institution where the book serves as a springboard to discuss, beyond the texts themselves, the major issues of our time: democracy, history, memory, geopolitical developments, social shifts, technology, translation, and the role of literature in the modern world. While remaining steadfastly oriented toward international dialogue, the Chania Book Festival systematically highlights the literary and cultural output of Crete. Thus, in this year's edition, special emphasis was once again placed on the participation of Cretan creators, as well as the presentation of books and themes connected to the history, language, culture, and contemporary intellectual life of Crete, strengthening the dialogue between local creation and the international literary environment.

The duration of the Festival was expanded, now spanning the entire week from Monday through Sunday. This allowed for the development of a daily schedule with better event distribution and reduced overlaps, while the elimination of the 10:00–11:00 PM late evening slot contributed to a more natural daily flow for both the public and guests. The new scenographic concept of the event spaces received particularly positive comments. Traditional conference-style layouts were replaced by sets reminiscent of hospitality and conversation lounges, creating a more direct relationship between speakers and the audience.

At the same time, the Festival's overall signage was completely redesigned, featuring new banners, roll-ups, stickers, and wall displays outside event spaces and on central city buildings (Chania Town Hall, Region of Crete). Furthermore, the use of QR codes on signage allowed visitors direct access to the detailed schedule at every event location. These organizational interventions contributed decisively to the smooth running of the event and drew exceptionally positive feedback from the public, authors, and collaborating organizations.

At Katechaki Square, the mobile urban seating structure MULaR once again functioned as an open information and gathering hub, focusing on introducing foreign authors yet untranslated into Greek to the Greek public. In the same venue, the radio station Diktio FM 91.5 made a distinct contribution as the live "voice" of the Festival. Through daily live broadcasts, select interviews with Greek authors, translators, and figures from the book industry, as well as continuous updates on the day's schedule and activities, the station brought the pulse of the CBF both to the city and online.

The Bookstore, which operated this year at the heart of the Festival in Katechaki Square in collaboration with local Chania bookstores (Comixadiko, Librairie, Sporaki), proved to be one of the most vibrant hubs of the event. It was not only the place where visitors acquired books by the participating authors, but a daily meeting spot for writers, translators, publishers, and readers, where conversations continued spontaneously after the events concluded.

In its fifth edition, the CBF inaugurated an educational program titled "Bibliomachies" (Book Battles), organized by the Municipality of Chania in collaboration with the Region of Crete, with the cooperation of local school units in the Chania Prefecture and the approval of the Directorates of Secondary and Primary Education of Chania. The program is implemented with the support of the Inter-Municipal Solid Waste Management Company [DEDISA S.A. (OTA)].

From February through March 2026, seven Greek creators conducted workshops across nine Primary and Secondary Education schools, utilizing tools from various fields of the arts and humanities—creative writing, theater, poetry, history, visual arts, storytelling, music, dance, comics, new technologies, and more—aiming to foster a love for reading through a creative approach to Greek-language and world literature, tied to the central theme of the 5th CBF.

"'Whatever came out of that child,' he continued, 'is standing before you today with feelings of gratitude for the honor you bestow upon him, and feels the need to dedicate this distinction to the memory of his teacher, Stelios Vasilakis, and through him to those educators who continue to light small fires in defiance of the times.'"
