MAIN THEME

Our home, the planet

The 4th Chania Book Festival (CBF) concluded with great success, leaving behind six days filled with inspiration, encounters, and lively dialogue about books. This year's event, organized by the Municipality of Chania in collaboration with the Region of Crete and under the auspices of the Hellenic Parliament, opened its doors on Tuesday, June 24, with the official inauguration by the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr. Nikitas Kaklamanis, and ended on Sunday, June 29, 2025, in an atmosphere of enthusiasm and participation.

With the central theme "Our home, the planet" and the slogan "We read, we discuss, we connect," the Festival invited the public to reflect on our relationship with the world and nature through the power of literature, speech, and encounter.

From the very first day, the public response was overwhelming. The halls were filled with readers of all ages, who participated in presentations, discussions, readings, and activities for young and old alike. The people of the book, creators, and visitors came together to form a lively and open community, proving that the Chania Book Festival is much more than a cultural event—it is a celebration of ideas, encounters, and inspiration that grows every year.

Expanding the FBC's connections and cooperation with similar festivals abroad, as well as local, national, and international cultural organizations.

During this year's 4th edition, the FBC discussed topics such as climate change and the relationship between humans and nature, family relationships in their various aspects in today's changing world, complex international geopolitical conditions, and all of these in their interaction with literature. There were also discussions on literary translation, the book market, dialects in Crete and Cyprus, and ways of collaborating between book festivals, with the participation of representatives from important festivals in Greece and abroad, such as the "Oh les beaux jours!" in Marseille, the LEA Festival (Greek-Ibero-American Literature Festival in Athens), the Limassol International Book Fair, and the Sardam International Interthematic Literature Festival in Cyprus.

This year's 4th Chania Book Festival took place exclusively around Katechaki Square, with the Mediterranean Architecture Center (Grand Arsenal - KAM) and the Mikis Theodorakis Theater, creating a more cohesive sense of "community" and making it easier for spectators to navigate the multi-layered program of multiple parallel events.

In particular, in addition to Hall 2 at the Mikis Theodorakis Theater, the Festival used the ground floor hall of the CAM (Grand Arsenal - Hall 2) as an event venue for the first time, while the picturesque staircase on Agios Markos Street was transformed into a unique space for selected literary events and poetry performances, adding a special atmosphere to this year's event. For the second consecutive year, the MULaR (Mobile Urban Living Room) mobile urban living room was present, the original, versatile, multifunctional space of the Municipality of Chania, as an additional venue for events and information, with the Chania radio station Diktio FM 91.5 broadcasting live the pulse of the Festival.

The FBC Bookstore, a collaboration between three bookstores in the city of Chania (Comixadiko, Librairie, To Sporaki) operated in the foyer of the Mikis Theodorakis Theater, while there was also an outdoor kiosk in front of the theater entrance every day. In addition, the books presented at each event were available for sale at the exit of the halls immediately after the end of the event.

Highlights - 4th Chania Book Festival 2025
"This festival is a significant event. Not only because it brings the city to life, not only because it attracts people from far away, but mainly because it creates dialogue between people. It breaks the loneliness that threatens each of us. And the problem, I think, is basically how to get everyone out of their loneliness and communicate with each other, and thus get to know themselves again. From this point of view, the Chania Festival makes a huge contribution to the effort to bring people together."
