Tuesday, June 24: Official Opening Ceremony & Inaugural Events
The 4th Chania Book Festival, organized by the Municipality of Chania in co-operation with the Region of Crete and under the auspices of the Hellenic Parliament, will open its doors on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, with the official inauguration ceremony followed by a series of opening events that engage with this year’s central theme, “Our Home, the Planet.”
From 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Great Arsenal, an honorary event dedicated to the work and memory of the distinguished journalist, folklorist, and author Nikos Psilakis will take place, with speakers Stavros Arnaoutakis, Governor of Crete; Pantelis Boukalas, poet, essayist, translator, and journalist; Thanasis Mpananevas, representative of the Union of Daily Newspaper Editors of Peloponnese–Epirus–Islands; and Maria Charalambaki, President of the Association of Philologists of Heraklion Prefecture. The discussion will be moderated by Giorgos St. Patroudakis, journalist and photographer. A welcome address will be delivered by Kyriakos Kortesis, President of the Union of Daily Newspaper Editors of Peloponnese–Epirus–Islands. (Co-organization: Karmanor Publishing.)
At the same time, at the “Mikis Theodorakis” Theatre, the award-winning Portuguese novelist and poet José Luís Peixoto will be in conversation with Adriana Martinez, director of the LEA Festival, about his new book You Died on Me, a narrative that grapples with loss and mourning, focusing on the father-son relationship. From 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, at the “Mikis Theodorakis” Theatre, internationally renowned academic and space scientist Dr. Stamatios Krimigis will converse with journalist and author Makis Provatas about their book “Ola se mia zoi. Apo tin Ihlio ston Galaxia” (“All in One Lifetime. From the Sun to the Galaxy”), tracing a journey that begins on Chios and reaches the farthest reaches of the solar system. From 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM, at the “Mikis Theodorakis” Theatre, the Official Opening Ceremony of the 4th Chania Book Festival will take place. The inauguration will be performed by the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr. Nikitas Kaklamanis.
From 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM, at the “Mikis Theodorakis” Theatre, the festival’s celebratory opening will be marked by the concert “Unforgettable”, featuring bass Christoforos Stamboglis and conductor-pianist Miltos Logiadis performing major hits from American musicals as well as some of the most famous jazz standards.

This year’s Chania Book Festival brings together more than 160 speakers from 16 countries—not only Greece and Cyprus, but also Haiti, Argentina, Brazil, France, the USA, Italy, Colombia, Cuba, the UK, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Turkey, and the Czech Republic. Authors, academics, translators, philologists, literary critics, journalists, and artists will take part in around 100 themed discussions, book presentations, workshops, performances, and concerts. Αll events revolve around contemporary Greek and international prose, poetry, and essays, and they are taking place at the city’s Venetian Harbour, between the Centre of Mediterranean Architecture and the “Mikis Theodorakis” Theatre.
The events of the Chania Book Festival are held in collaboration with publishing houses and cultural organizations and institutions such as the National Library of Greece, the Hellenic Foundation for Book and Culture, the Municipal and Regional Theatre of Crete, the Chania Municipal Art Gallery, the Orthodox Academy of Crete, the Chania Municipal Library, the Chania Cultural Center, the Hellenic-French Association of Chania, the Association of Philologists of Chania, the National Research and Study Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos,” the Pancretan Association of Friends of Mikis Theodorakis, the Friends of the Poet Manolis Anagnostakis Society, the Chania Film Festival, Chaniartoon, the Association of Greek Librarians and Information Scientists, and others.
International participants in this year’s Festival number more than 30 (up from 21 in 2024, 12 in 2023, and 7 in 2022). These collaborations include the LEA Festival (Greek-Ibero-American Literature Festival in Athens), the British Council, the Institut Français de Grèce, the Instituto Cervantes, Acción Cultural Española, Camões – Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua (Portugal), Norwegian Literature Abroad (NORLA), Literature Across Frontiers, with the support of the Department of Contemporary Culture of the Cyprus Deputy Ministry of Culture and the Embassies of Argentina, Brazil, France, Spain, Cuba, the United Kingdom, Portugal, and Norway.
