22/05/2025The 4th Chania Book Festival Kicked Off with Peter Constantine
The 4th Chania Book Festival officially opened with a special literary evening on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the Center of Mediterranean Architecture. The guest of honor for this pre-festival event was Peter Constantine, the acclaimed and award-winning translator, author, and professor at the University of Connecticut.
The occasion marked the recent release of his debut novel, The Purchased Bride (Patakis Publishers, 2024), based on the true story of his Greek grandmother. During the event, Peter Constantine was in conversation with journalist Kyriaki Beioglou, while excerpts from the novel were read aloud by traditional storyteller Evi Dimou.
Choosing Peter Constantine to inaugurate this year’s program highlights the Festival’s strong focus on literary translation to and from Greek—not only to introduce Greek audiences to international literary currents, but also to present Greek-language literature to a global readership. Translation, as a creative and cultural journey, will receive even greater emphasis in this year’s Festival program through a series of dedicated events.
